True Love (?)

"Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same."
-- Cathy
(Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte)

Now I might be wrong ofcourse, but as far as I see it, ‘love’ is among the most over-rated concepts that exists in our society. Popular culture celebrates romantic love in such a fashion that it convinces us that if we don not find ourselves a soul mate, we are anything short of but doomed for eternity. And that’s a scary thought for most.
So here’s what happened. A few of my cousins (okay, only two) very really troubled when they read Eclipse. Why? Because Bella realizes that she’s in love with two people—Edward Cullen & Jacob Black—at the same time! I admit, I was disturbed too, like all the other girls but that was because I really care for Edward even though he’s fictional. There was another cousin of mine though who actually rang me up to ask one of those questions that virtually shake the foundations of our love songs: Can a person be in love with two people at the same time?
My answer: I think so.
I know I sound almost blasphemous when I said that, but really, how can you tell? It really does confuse me anyways—this concept of “true love”. Don’t get me wrong, it is very sweet and when I was watching ps: I love you, I went like “awwwww….”. What I don’t get is the various response to it. So to help me understand, there comes another idea for a story (read: book) where my character falls in love with two men together. A pretty mess of things it’s bound to become. I ended up telling my cousin that perhaps one could love two people when they are virtually opposite of each other (which is what Bella Swan does). I ended up sounding anything but like myself. But really, I think when a person loves two different people, they really are in love with one whole person which is represented by two different people. If you think this theory is weird, English (Honours) is not for you. In literature, we call this split personality “alter ego” and make it sound like something intellectual. Which it is not.
